Dr. Joseph Wybran, a prominent Belgian immunologist and leader of Jewish organizations, was shot dead in 1989. The murder remains unsolved, though a convicted murderer named Abdelkadder Belliraj confessed to the crime in 2008.

Wybran was a Holocaust survivor and a respected figure in Belgium's Jewish community.  He was involved in efforts to remove a controversial Catholic convent from the grounds of the Auschwitz death camp.

Shortly after his death, a shadowy group called the Soldiers of the Right claimed responsibility.  However, suspicion also fell on Belgian neo-Nazis.  Years later, Belliraj, a Moroccan-Belgian with a history of violent crime, confessed to Wybran's murder along with several others.  Belliraj later recanted his confession, claiming torture.  He was convicted in Morocco on unrelated charges and is unlikely to be extradited to Belgium.  The Belgian investigation remains officially open, but with little hope of further developments.
